General Introduction to Department of Dermatology

As early as 1887, David Duncan Main, an Englishman, founded a leprosy hospital in Hangzhou. In 1921, Stephen Douglas Sturton, a British medical doctor, was concurrently the president of Guangji Hospital (the predecessor of our hospital) and the president of Guangji Leprosy Hospital. In 1924, 60 leprosy patients were admitted. In 1949, Jawes Laidlaw Maxwell, a world-famous leprosy expert, attended Guangji Hospital of Hangzhou. In 1952, the leprosy hospital was taken over by the people's government, with 187 inpatients. After taking over, the hospital moved to Shangbai Township, Wukang County and renamed Wukang Sanatorium (now Zhejiang Institute of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases). In 1950, Lin Nengwu founded the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases in Guangji Hospital of Hangzhou. In 1956, the dermatology ward was established in our hospital. Yao Jichang and Lin Nengwu were the chief and deputy directors. In 1958, after the establishment of Wenzhou Medical College, Lin Nengwu was assigned to establish the dermatology department of Wenzhou Medical College. Zheng Fuzhao was appointed deputy director of dermatology in 1970 and director of department in Zhejiang People's Hospital in 1985. In 1980, Zhang Zan and two colleagues transferred to the Department of Dermatology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Zhejiang University and served as department director. Since 1984, Sun Guojun has been the director of the Department and the Department of teaching and research, Zhu Tiecheng has been the deputy director of the department, and Song Mei has been the deputy director of the Department since 1988. In 1995, Lao Limin was deputy director and presided over the work. Cheng Hao was deputy director of the teaching and research department. In 1997, Cheng Hao was transferred to the Department of Dermatology of Shao Yifu Hospital and successively served as deputy director and director of the department. In January 1996, Lao Limin went to Japan to study. In January of the same year, Zheng Min received his doctorate in Germany and returned China. In April 1996, he was the director of the Department and the research department. Since 2003, he has been the director of Dermatology and Venereology degree of Zhejiang University Medical College. Lao Limin continued to serve as deputy director after returning to China in 2001. Lv Zhongfa and Man Xiaoyong successively became deputy directors in 2014 and 2016. In 2018, Man Xiaoyong was appointed Director of Dermatology and Venereology Degree of Zhejiang University Medical College, and in 2019, Man Xiaoyong succeeded Professor Zheng Min as Director of Dermatology Department.

 

In 1956, the Zhejiang Branch of the Special Committee of Dermatology of the Chinese Medical Association was established, and regular academic activities were carried out. Yao Jichang, director of Dermatology of our hospital, was the first, second and third chairman. In 1984, Sun Guojun took over the chairman of the fourth dermatology branch of Zhejiang Medical Association and served three consecutive terms (fourth, fifth and sixth sessions). Professor Sun Guojun was also a member of the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth sessions of the dermatology and venereal diseases branch of the Chinese Medical Association (1984-2002); Professor Zheng Min was the chairman of the eighth and ninth sessions of the dermatology branch of Zhejiang Medical Association, and the eleventh session of the chairman-designate. Since 2012, Professor Zheng Min has served as Vice-Chairman of Dermatology and Venereology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, Chairman of Psoriasis Group and National Executive Member of Dermatologist Branch of Chinese Medical Association. Since 2016, he has continued to serve as vice-chairman of Dermatology and Venereology branch of Chinese Medical Association, chairman of Dermatology and Venereology branch of Zhejiang Medical Association, member of Scientific Committee of International Psoriasis Federation, chief expert of National Psoriasis Research Center, and chief expert of acne research center. At the same time, Professor Zheng Min has actively participated in international academic organizations and served as a member of the Scientific Committee of the Psoriasis International Network and a member of the International Psoriasis Council. In 2017, Professor Zheng Min was awarded the ILDS Outstanding Contribution Award for his achievements in psoriasis research. In 2018, Professor Zheng Min was awarded the honorary title of "National Famous Doctor and Excellent Character" by the Chinese Medical Association.

 

Adhering to the fine tradition of our predecessors and with the efforts of generations of dermatologists, the dermatology department of the Second Hospital of Zhejiang University has grown steadily, and has developed into one of the main clinical, teaching and scientific research centers of dermatology in Zhejiang Province. It is also a training base for advanced academic personnel in clinical dermatology and Venereology approved by the Academic Degree Office of the State Council. Additionally, it is a granting point for master's and doctoral degrees, the training base for resident/specialist in dermatology and Venereology of the Ministry of Health, the discipline point of Zhejiang excellent course, the base for drug clinical trials of the Ministry of Health and the base for monitoring adverse drug reactions of cosmetics. In 2012, it was approved by the Ministry of Health as one of the key clinical specialty construction units in dermatology.

 

There are 45 medical staffs, 16 senior doctors, 3 doctoral supervisors and 7 master supervisors. At present, the department has sub-specialties of Dermatology such as dermatopathology, medical fungi, skin cosmetic laser, dermatosurgery, sexually transmitted diseases, hair specialty and so on, as well as special outpatient clinics of psoriasis, acne, allergic skin diseases, dermatosurgery and hair diseases. We pay close attention to the new technologies and advances in skin diagnosis and treatment at home and abroad. We will introduce and develop the latest technologies in time. And there are obvious disciplinary advantages and rich clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, immune-related inflammatory skin diseases, allergic diseases, alopecia, pigmented and vascular diseases, infectious skin diseases, hereditary skin diseases, skin tumors and difficult critical diseases etc., which has been well-known in dermatology circles in China. This specialty is designated by the Medical and Health Science and Technology Development Research Center of the Ministry of Health, the Psoriasis Research Center of the Dermatology and Venereal Diseases Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the Research Center of atopic dermatitis and acne, the standardized STD clinic center of Hangzhou, and the special fund of the Ministry of Health. Professors participated in the formulation of national and Asia-Pacific guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of various skin diseases. They published clinical research articles in SCI journals with high impact factors, such as JAMA, NEJM, etc., hence influencing the dermatology circles at home and abroad.

 

As the responsible department of Dermatology and venereology in the Medical College of Zhejiang University, our department undertakes theoretical and clinical teaching of Dermatology and venereology and allergy for five-year undergraduates, seven-year students, eight-year students, master's degree students, doctoral students and foreign students in the clinical department of the Medical College. It was appraised as an excellent quality course in Zhejiang Province by an expert evaluation panel organized by Zhejiang Education Department. More than 10 doctoral students and 40 master's students are trained in the discipline; hundreds of medical and nursing personnel from all over the province are accepted; and national continuing education classes are held every year. As one of European Society of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases International Window Exchange Project Center in China, our department has been successfully hosting or cooperating with the international continuing education projects. Up to now, more than 1,000 professionals of dermatology have been trained at home and abroad, and they play a key role in hospitals all over the world. As the oldest dermatology department in Zhejiang Province, our department is responsible for the standardized training of resident physicians. The Department designates a senior doctor as the main teacher responsible for the training of every resident. The teaching team regularly teaches in small classes and assesses at different stages to ensure the effectiveness and continuity of the training.

 

We attach great importance to the integration of medical treatment, teaching and scientific research and the mutual promotion of the development of disciplines. While constantly improving the levels of clinical treatment and expanding social influence, we are also committed to improving the levels of scientific research and clinical transformation of research results. In recent years, our department has published more than 300 papers, including internationally renowned JAMA and NEJM magazines, and has compiled 13 books and textbooks. The department has undertaken more than 30 National Natural Science Foundation and one key project, two Sino-German Science Center research projects, four projects planned by Zhejiang Science and Technology Department, four Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation and multiple provincial scientific research projects and funds of the Chinese Medical Association. We have won 2 provincial and ministerial second-class prizes for scientific and technological progress, 12 provincial and higher prizes for scientific and technological progress, and 2 national invention patents. In addition, we have launched a number of cooperative studies with UCLA, Minster University, Kyle University and Fukui University etc.

 

In 2019, the Department of Dermatology of the Second Hospital of Zhejiang University proposed that we should build an internationally renowned specialty of excellent affiliated hospitals of first-class universities in the world. We will go forward bravely heading for this set goal, make continuous efforts and forge ahead, and continue to move forward in clinical, scientific researches and teaching working.
